After my first three-hour session to activate my gifts and clear my blocks, my stomach issues resolved overnight but I was shocked to wake up with a raging head cold and sore throat. I had to stay in bed for three days, feeling worse than I had in months. I remember thinking, “I paid all this money to feel better-so why do I feel so awful after a session?”
Four months later, after I had already begun channeling, I experienced a massive expansion in my heart and throat chakras. It started as a sore throat and a slight cough, but I ignored the signs to rest and integrate. I asked for help from 5 different healers to help with the symptoms. I was panicking thinking “ I don’t have time to be sick” and I was trying to “will” my way better. I was embarrassed and thought “I am doing all this energy healing, yet why am I so sick”? I didn’t listen to the basic message which was: rest, rest, rest. I had so many layers to shed and release and the body needed time to do this. I refused to rest enough and that decision landed me with pneumonia.
Why You Might Feel Worse Before You Feel Better
This experience is known as a “healing crisis,” and it’s surprisingly common after energy healing. Many people report cold or flu-like symptoms, fatigue, headaches, or mood swings in the days following a session. Energy work can stir up old, stagnant energies and bring toxins or suppressed emotions to the surface as your body works to release them.
Lorie Ladd, in her book The Divine Design, explains that as lower densities and old energies leave the body, discomfort is a natural part of the process. These dense energies, often rooted in fear, trauma, or unprocessed emotions, must move through your physical system before you can embody higher states of consciousness.
Dr. Brian L. Weiss, renowned for his work on past-life regression and healing, also notes that the release of old energies-sometimes even from previous lifetimes-can trigger physical and emotional symptoms as the body and spirit adjust to new states of being.
Other medical intuitives describe energy healing as a deep reset for your body and mind-one that can temporarily leave you feeling drained, emotional, or physically unwell as your system recalibrates.
Healing Crisis: Moving Beyond the Victim Mindset
For some, there may be a subconscious or conscious resistance to healing/change and to shedding the identity as sick, in pain or chronically ill. Perhaps they have more empathy from people when they are sick, get more care from their loved ones and are more able to set “boundaries” due to the limitations they have physically. They feel heard and get emotional support, comfort and care from their weekly physiotherapy sessions, doctor visits, or have an excuse to get a massage. These are deep questions that can be explored with your practitioner.
A healing crisis is not just a physical process, it’s also an invitation to shed the “victim” mindset and the identity rooted in suffering. When intense symptoms arise, it can feel like a slap in the face, forcing you to surrender to life’s process and trust that everything is unfolding for your highest good. If you stay stuck in “poor me” thinking and worry excessively about the symptoms, you may find that the discomfort persists. The healing crisis is a powerful reminder to let go of resistance, trust in the flow of life, and embrace the idea that you are being guided and supported, even when it feels challenging. Shifting your mindset from victimhood to trust and acceptance is a crucial part of deep healing.
Everyone’s Experience Is Unique
After an energy healing session, experiences can vary widely from person to person. Some feel lighter, more peaceful, or energized, while others may experience fatigue, cold or flu-like symptoms, or emotional ups and downs as the body releases old energies and toxins. This variability depends on what energies are being cleared and your body’s current state.
Common Post-Session Symptoms
- Cold or flu-like symptoms
- Sore throat or cough
- Extreme fatigue
- Emotional ups and downs
- Headaches or body aches
- Increased need for rest
- Speaking out more if your throat chakra was blocked (a positive sign of energy moving and your voice being freed)
How the Body Releases Toxins
Your body may release toxins and old energies through sweating, urination, coughing, or even through the skin. Supporting this process can make a big difference in your recovery.
How to Support Your Healing and Integration
- Rest: Prioritize sleep and downtime to allow your system to recalibrate. The universe may be telling you to slow down-listen!
- Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins.
- Nourish: Eat hydrating, anti-inflammatory, and nourishing foods such as: water-rich fruits and vegetables (cucumbers, watermelon, oranges) Berries, cherries, turmeric, ginger, leafy greens, salmon, walnuts ;Complex carbs and lean proteins like oatmeal, quinoa, brown rice, fish, legumes ; Warm broths and herbal teas to soothe the system
- Movement: Gentle stretching, walking, or swimming in the ocean can help release energy and absorb healing minerals.
- Breathwork: Slow, rhythmic breathing clears energy blockages and calms the nervous system.
- Saunas and salt baths:Promote detoxification through sweating and energetic cleansing.
- Massage: Supports lymphatic drainage and relaxation.
- Calming music and media: Choose high-vibration music, use tuning forks or sound bowls; watch uplifting shows to stabilize your energy.
- Self-expression: If your throat chakra was blocked, you may find yourself speaking more-this is a sign of healing.
Final Thoughts
Feeling unwell after an energy healing session is not a sign that something went wrong. On the contrary, it often means your body and energy field are working hard to release what no longer serves you. This discomfort is temporary-and what follows is often greater clarity, vitality, and spiritual growth.
As medical intuitive Caroline Myss explains, “The soul always knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind”. Healing is not always comfortable: “Healing is a different type of pain. It’s the pain of becoming aware of the power of one’s strength and weakness, of one’s capacity to love or do damage to oneself and to others, and of how the most challenging person to control in life is ultimately yourself”. She reminds us, “We are not meant to stay wounded. We are supposed to move through our tragedies and challenges and to help each other move through the many painful episodes of our lives. By remaining stuck in the power of our wounds, we block our own transformation”.
So next time you feel under the weather after a session, remember: your body is doing the deep work. Rest, hydrate, nourish, and trust the process. Your healing journey is unique, and with patience and care, you will emerge stronger and more aligned with your soul’s purpose.

Peggy! Thank you so much for this wonderful post. I was in the group seminar last night – May 15/25 (Clearing blocks/Light language) and you mentioned this blog. It has answered all my questions. I am experiencing exactly this. Ever since 2023 any healings I have gone to have left me drained, unwell or purging. When I started Reiki it kicked off again 🙄 This has given me such peace of mind. Thank you again.Deeply Grateful x
